Why Has Olive Oil Been So Expensive Recently?

January 6, 2025

Olive oil prices have surged dramatically in recent months across the USA and Europe, leaving both consumers and producers grappling with higher costs. Traditionally viewed as a staple product in Mediterranean diets and a premium cooking oil globally, olive oil has now become an expensive commodity. Several key factors have contributed to the price increase, and while there is hope for some relief in 2025, uncertainties remain.

Key Factors Driving Up Olive Oil Prices

Adverse Weather Conditions
One of the primary reasons for skyrocketing olive oil prices is climate-related. Southern Europe—notably Spain, Italy, and Greece—has faced severe droughts and heatwaves over the past two years. Spain, which typically accounts for nearly half of the world’s olive oil production, saw its harvests decline drastically due to prolonged dry spells and record-breaking temperatures. Without sufficient water, olive trees cannot produce the same yields, leading to a significant supply shortage.

Rising Production Costs
Inflation has hit agricultural production hard. Costs for fertilizers, fuel, labor, and transportation have all increased. With olive oil production already being labor-intensive, higher wages and input costs have added pressure to pricing.

Supply Chain Disruptions
Global supply chain issues, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic and were exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, have also contributed to higher olive oil prices. The increased cost of shipping and delays in logistics have made it harder to maintain stable prices.

High Demand
Despite rising prices, global demand for olive oil remains robust. Consumers in many parts of the world, especially in the USA and northern Europe, are increasingly opting for olive oil due to its perceived health benefits. This sustained demand amid reduced supply has further driven prices upward.

Will Prices Come Down in 2025?

There is cautious optimism that olive oil prices could begin to stabilize or even decrease in 2025. Much of this hope hinges on better weather conditions in the key producing regions of southern Europe.

If Spain, Italy, and Greece experience more favorable weather in 2024, olive yields are likely to improve, increasing supply and easing pressure on prices. Deoleo, a major olive oil producer, has projected that prices could decrease by as much as 50% if harvests return to normal levels. However, climate unpredictability remains a significant risk factor, and a return to historic price levels may not happen quickly.

Additionally, some producers and retailers are exploring ways to manage costs more effectively, such as improving harvesting techniques and adopting more sustainable farming practices.

Why PET and rPET Are Great for Olive Oil Packaging

As prices rise, ensuring the quality and longevity of olive oil becomes even more crucial. Packaging plays a vital role in protecting olive oil from light, air, and heat, all of which can degrade its quality. This is where PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and rPET (recycled PET) come into play as excellent options for olive oil packaging.

Benefits of PET and rPET Packaging

Lightweight and Durable
PET bottles are significantly lighter than traditional glass containers. This reduces transportation costs and minimizes the risk of breakage during handling and shipping. For producers and retailers, the lighter weight translates to lower carbon emissions during transportation.

Excellent Barrier Properties
PET offers excellent protection against oxygen and moisture, helping to preserve the flavor, aroma, and nutritional qualities of olive oil. This is particularly important given the premium prices consumers are paying.

Recyclability and Sustainability
rPET, made from recycled plastic, offers an eco-friendly alternative to virgin plastic. By using rPET, producers can reduce their environmental impact while meeting consumer demand for sustainable products. Many countries in Europe are pushing for higher recycled content in packaging, making rPET an increasingly attractive option for olive oil brands.

Cost-Effective
Compared to glass, PET and rPET are more cost-effective to produce and transport. In a time when olive oil prices are already high, cost savings in packaging can help offset some of the increased production expenses.

Design Versatility
PET and rPET packaging can be easily molded into different shapes and sizes, allowing brands to differentiate themselves on store shelves. Whether it's a sleek, modern design or a traditional look, PET provides flexibility in branding.

TLDR

The recent surge in olive oil prices across the USA and Europe have led to some calling it 'liquid gold', the price increases can be attributed to a combination of climate challenges, rising production costs, and supply chain disruptions. While there is hope that prices may come down in 2025, much depends on future weather patterns and improvements in global supply chains.

Meanwhile, innovations in packaging, such as the use of PET and rPET, offer valuable solutions for producers seeking to maintain product quality while addressing environmental concerns. As the industry navigates these challenges, both consumers and producers will need to adapt to a changing market landscape.
