PET Plastic and Peanut Butter Go Together Like PB&J

Earlier this month, Plascene had the privilege of manning a booth at the Winter Fancy Food Show in Las Vegas. We experienced all kinds of amazing specialty foods, many of which will be highlighted in future blog posts. But today, I’d like to focus on one of my personal favorites… peanut butter.

Now, I should mention that when I was growing up, peanut butter basically came in two varieties—smooth and crunchy. Most of us started off on the crunchy stuff, but as we grew older, our palates grew more sophisticated and we came to appreciate the subtle nuance and terroir of the smooth.

So imagine our surprise to discover dozens of vendors at the show, each dedicated to presenting their own unique take on this spreadable classic. I’m talking a veritable cornucopia of peanut butter. And almond butter. And chickpea butter. And… well, just read on.

BNutty Nut Butters

Founded by two soccer moms who “were tired of watching their kids eat gas station junk food on the road to games,” BNutty boasts an insanely diverse collection of gourmet peanut butters, with flavors as diverse as White Chocolate Truffle, Pecan Pie, and Cinnamon Sugar Cookie.

Brad’s Organic Nut Butters

Brad’s Organic offers a line of products that are USDA organic, certified kosher, vegan, gluten free, and cholesterol free. Of course, you’d never guess it from the way they taste. Aside from the standard smooth and crunchy varieties of peanut butter, Brad’s Organic also produces almond butter, cashew butter, and roasted macadamia butter in various permutations.

Enzo’s Table

Enzo’s Table is a farm-to-table operation based in San Joaquin Valley. Although they’re probably better known for their award-winning olive oil, they also offer a trio of gourmet almond butters. In addition to the traditional Almond Butter, Enzo’s Table also produces and sells Chocolate Almond Butter and the seasonal Autumn Spice Almond Butter.

Fiddyment Farms

Based in Roseville, California (just east of Sacramento), Fiddyment Farms has elevated the pistachio to an art form. Of particular interest (to me at least) is their pistachio butter. It’s superficially similar to peanut butter, but less sweet and more earthy. Think of it as a creamy spread with an intensified pistachio flavor. Can’t picture it? You may just have to try it.

Haitoglou Family Foods

When the Haitoglou family arrived from Thessaloniki, Greece almost a century ago, they brought with them a secret family recipe for making halva, a sesame-based confection. Since opening their small shop in 1924, they have expanded their repertoire to include a number of Mediterranean-inspired treats such as sesame butters and almond butters… and

chickpea butter! This surprisingly healthy spread is creamy and nutty, with a taste that’s nearly impossible to describe. Subtly sweet, it tastes like a cross between peanut butter, sunflower seed butter, and roasted chickpeas. Definitely worth a try!

Koeze Peanut Butter

Crafted in small batches from a recipe perfected by Albertus Koeze in 1925, this peanut butter is made from roasted Virginian peanuts and a touch of sea salt and… nothing else! It’s definitely a classic that deserves more fame. Florence Fabricant, a food and wine critic for the New York Times, wrote, “[I]t is neither creamy nor chunky but totally irresistible.”

Retreat Foods

For those who demand more than mere deliciousness from their food, Retreat offers an a line of adaptogenic nut butters that promise to reduce stress and fight inflammation, as well as provide you with protein. These superfood spreads are made with healthy herbs, sweetened with dates, and sprinkled with sea salt.

PET Plastic for Packaging Peanut Butter

When it comes to packaging peanut butter, you couldn’t pick a more perfect packaging product than Plascene PET plastic. (Try saying that 5 times really fast!) Our PET straight wall round jars or traditional jars come in a variety of sizes, with large openings that allow for effortless scooping, dipping, spreading, or what have you. The straight walls make these jars very easy to label. And best of all, PET plastic is:

  • Food-safe. All of our PET and rPET plastic products are FDA-approved for food contact, so they’re just as safe as glass when it comes to maintaining freshness and flavor.
  • Clear. We do offer opaque options, but our crystal clear plastic jars are perfect for showcasing your product.
  • Durable. PET and rPET plastic jars are more durable than fragile glass jars, which often crack and break when handled roughly. Our jars are also much lighter than their glass counterparts, which makes them ideal for shipping.
  • 100% Recyclable. You can promote your peanut butter *and* protect the Earth! What’s not to love?
