Whether you're working out, fighting the flu, or simply enduring the heat, it's vital to keep your body hydrated. Here are five beverages that will help you stay cool this summer.
All right, this one is basically a no-brainer. Your body is 60% water and you lose around 8-12 cups of water a day by sweating, urinating, and even breathing. Drinking water (still or sparkling) is the simplest way to replace it. Water may be a bit light in the electrolyte department, with only trace amounts of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. However, it's readily available and calorie-free. Plus, it's refreshing as heck.
Sports drinks like Gatorade are great for replenishing electrolytes, which makes them great for hydrating after an extensive workout or any other high-intensity activity. They're more flavorful than water, which makes them easier to drink (and hydrate) more quickly. Bear in mind, a lot of sports drinks are loaded with artificial colors and excess sugar so make sure you check the labels before choosing one.
To caffeinate or not to caffeinate? That is the question. Experts are divided on whether or not caffeine causes fluid loss, but most sources (including the Mayo Clinic) say that caffeine used in moderation with risk of dehydration.
Tea (herbal, black, or chamomile) can be just as hydrating as water and it's loaded with antioxidants. And if you're concerned about your caffeine intake, you can dilute your tea with water or explore the many caffeine-free options available.
Okay, so watermelon isn't technically a “beverage.” However, it is 92% water, which means it will do a better job of hydrating you than most fruit juices. Plus, it contains a heaping helping of vitamin A, vitamin C, and electrolytes.
With a 95% water content and a healthy dose of electrolytes, coconut water is occasionally referred to as "nature's sports drink." Coconut water contains some natural sugars, but it's much healthier for you than drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Note: Some bottled coconut water is "enhanced" with extra sugar and other added ingredients, so make sure you check the label.
